55 | Why Diets Fail and You Never Feel Good Enough

Focusing on outcomes rather than enjoying yourself in the moment is the biggest reason why diets fail.

Most diet and exercise programs focus on losing X amount in X days.

What about your mindset and level of enjoyment in those days?

If you can’t enjoy the process and the moment right now, it’s almost impossible to feel good enough when you reach the goal.

There will always be another goal in the future you want to reach.

Instead of focusing on what you don’t have right now, you have to create ways to feel good in the moment.

Stop telling yourself, “I’l be happy when…” or “I’ll be confident when…” when right now is all you really have.

I used to do this so much.

I obsessed about the future, accomplishing goals like graduating from college, getting married, buying a house, etc.

When I reached those goals, yes it felt great.

But almost immediately afterwards, I had my eyes on the next one.

When we do this, we destroy our ability to be grateful and thankful for what we have right now.

An obsession with the future leads to anxiousness and worry. Dieting is all about a future state in which you can be happy, sexy, and confident.

But when you’re focused so much on the physical results, you’re afraid it won’t work and you’ll waste all this energy on something – just to be let down.

But what if instead of focusing all that energy on the future, you made decisions in the present moment that made you feel healthy?

Dieting is really about making a commitment to health and feeling good.

There are no rules that you have to be a certain weight or look a certain way in order to feel good.

Or at least, to feel better than you did yesterday.

Feeling good is all relative anyway, right?

What feels good to you might not feel good to me, or your neighbor, etc.

So find a sustainable way to start feeling good and focusing on the present moment. Listen to your body.

It carries so much wisdom about what you really need, but we tune it out in favor of fitness advice, rules, and programs.

When you learn to listen to yourself, you unlock the power to let your intuition and your nature guide your decisions.
